Battle of New Wave Bands (VOTING DEADLINE: Sunday March 30th 5pm EST)

Borrowing a page from the NCAA College Basketball 'March Madness' tournament, I have created a Battle of New Wave bands (punk, synth, power pop, ska) ranked bracket of 32 artists/bands grouped into four 'concert venue' categories.

Simply send a Comment  (enter Name only in Name/URL drop-down option) to this post with your selections, ie A) 1, 4, 3, 2  B) etc...

When voting take into account the Artist/Band's impact to the New Wave genre and entire body of work.

The winners for each round will be announced in a few weeks after enough votes are collected.  Then the voting continues..... until ONE Champion New Wave Artist/Band is Selected by Popular Vote.

Good Luck and keep the Votes coming in!

1 (English Beat)-Whether The Beat (Ranking Roger's band touring Britain) or The English Beat, (Dave Wakeling's US-based band), original band members of the English Beta prove that ska music remains as infectious a dance music as ever; 4 (Cure)-The band's music continues to influence a new generation of performers who fall under the category of "emo". Not to mention that Robert Smith's Goth-inspired style has rippled through pop culture in movies like Edward Scissorhands and comic books like The Crow; 7 (B52s)-This band originally from Sthens, Georgia continues to churn out infectious dance-party classics like "Rock Lobster" and Planet Claire". The continued popularity of these tunes is testament to their longevity as a band nearly forty years later. 3 (Police)-By 1983 the music press had hailed them as "The Biggest Band in the World." VH1, Rolling Stone and Billboard have all ranked the band among the top influences of the last 30 years.

1 (Ramones)-This band can lay serious claim to being the first real punk band, a genre of music with its anarchistic style that continues to register with a new generation of music. Music historian Jon Savage has written of their debut album Ramones that "it remains one of the few records that changed pop forever"; 4 (Depeche Mode)-The recent use of "Just Can't Get Enough" in a Bell TV commercial speaks to the on-going influence of one of the greatest synth bands of all time. They may not have been the first band to start this genre but they are perhaps the most significant even to this day; 2 (Smiths)-Nobody sounded quite like them back then and no one sounds like them (aka Morrissey) today. This band occupies its own category without peer. Arguably, they have made the most literate use of punk-pop lyrics ever. Their influence has been felt as far afield as Canadian Douglas Coupland's 1998 novel Girlfriend in a Coma and British bands The Stone Roses and Oasis; 6 (Gary Numan-) The synth pioneer's new album, Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind), was released worldwide in 2013 and its UK Top 20 charting, his first since the early 1980s, proves that he still has an audience that loves angry, alienated pop tunes.

1 (Clash)- Along with punk, this band's music incorporated elements of reggae, dub, funk, and rockabilly with effortless virtuosity. Joe Strummer's lyrics also showed how angry a political message could be wrapped up in a powerful punk melody; 4 (Kraftwerk)-Formed in Düsseldorf in 1970, this band's distinctive sound was revolutionary, exerting a lasting influence on many genres of modern music. According to The Observer, "No other band since the Beatles has given so much to pop culture" and a wide range of artists have been influenced by their music and image; 2 (New Order)-This could be the hardest working band today, still touring extensively around the world. At the 2005 NME Awards, New Order and Joy Division received the award for "Godlike Geniuses" (for lifetime achievement). Say no more; 3 (Specials)-Also known as The Special AKA, this 2 Tone and ska revival band, combined "danceable ska and a rocksteady beat with punk's energy and attitude", and had a "more focused and informed political and social stance" than other ska groups.

1 (Sex Pistols)-Rolling Stone has said that the band, "in direct opposition to the star trappings and complacency" of mid-1970s rock, "came to spark and personify one of the few truly critical moments in pop culture-the rise of punk. "God save the queen, she ain't no human being"; 5 (Duran Duran)- Despite the band's quick rise to stardom, their polished good looks, their embrace of the teen-pop boy band aesthetic, which almost certainly destroyed any chance at pop music credibility with the critics. The band endures even to this day. We now recognize their ground-breaking talent by fusing pop music with MTV music video imagery, one of the first bands to do this; 2 (Elvis Costello)-Costello is not only a significant punk performer from the 70s and a cameloen since then, he is also a music fan. He often champions the works of his music idols in print. For example, he has written several pieces for the magazine like Vanity Fair, including the summary of what a perfect weekend of music would be; 3 (Talking Heads)-Music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine describes Talking Heads as "one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the '80s." In 2002, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four of the band's albums appeared on Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Arguably, David Byrne's influence continues to be felt in the music and art world today.

Fun! I love this John! I think the Talking Heads got a tough break by drawing a 3 seed. They are an easy 1 or 2 (in my bracket - hahahaha). Looking forward to the second round!

    1. Brian, happy you are enjoying Round 1. It was tough seeding the Bands, and your case for Talking Heads is a good one. Ultimately, the most popular bands will advance. Hope to have Round 2 available by end of this coming week!
