EASY! The Clash!
ReplyDeleteThis is really so hard. Both bands continue to exert an influence on the music scene today. I hear the Cure referenced all the time in the music of 90's bands like Smashing Pumpkins and The KIllers to more recently the trance movement with Chemical Brothers.
ReplyDeleteThe Clash are equally iconic a band but for very different reasons. If the Cure helped to usher in the Emo movement in music with all its angst, the Clash put the edge in politically inspired lyrics. Songs like "Police and Thieves" and "London Calling" brought social issues into the mainstream. The band even helped to make the word "punk" an adjective, meaning everything that is rebellious. Everyone from Billy Bragg to U2 to the Arctic Monkeys acknowledge their debt to the boys from working class London.
I'm flipping a coin on this one: Heads...put me down for the Clash John.
Two votes for The Cure.
